Hiking Mt. Mudeung

Hak-dong Jeungshim Temple decorated especially for Buddhas Birthday.

It has been another weekend of high spirits and low funds. So with a list of ‘must-do’s’ that we had constructed during our first broke weekend in Gwangju, we decided to cross-off a big one, literally.

At 1,187m above sea level Mt Mudeung is a natural beauty which sets Gwangju apart from other metropolitan cities. Located no more than 20 mins from the city centre, it offers tranquil surroundings to city dwellers bored of the Tom’ n Tom coffee shops. You will enter the ‘tranquil and natural beauty’ once you escape the car park which holds thousands of carparks (I exaggerate) and walk through a open-air shopping mall, fully stocked with outdoor clothing, scarf’s, visors and poles galore.  Rushing past the restaurants and conglomerate outfitters we soon reached the mountain itself.

There are many options for a days hike from 40mins – 4/5hours! The humidity made our minds up for us and we selected the Saeinbong 1.9km walk which took little over an hour return and offered stunning views for almost the entire journey.

The information centre boast of the butterflies, flowers and animals living on the mountain. Beware the Lepoardt cat. Although we seemed to miss it.

In Spring, royal azaleas blossom in light pink cover the mountain entrance and fresh flowing water from the valley streams guide you up the mountain, providing a refreshing drink – or bath for the daring.  In fall evergreen trees and an assortment of plants create a scene from an enchanting oriental painting, christened by the snowflakes of winter. Any season will find Mt Mudeung in fine form.
